At 1st I was excited to hear about the non-govt currency, Mendo Moola- but after listening to you & Ells Cooperrider on The Party’s Over, I see that this is only for people who already have plenty of money- one has to have regular Federal currency to participate, traditional wealth. What I was hoping to see was a sophisticated form of barter/currency. Example: I have a service. I sew. My husband has a service. He’s a carpenter. We need a backhoe service. The backhoe guy doesn’t need sewing or carpentry, but he needs a massage. The Masseuse needs food. The farmer needs carpentry. How can we make this trade work in a simple way? Mendo Hours? I don’t know, but I’m sure it can be done. Mendo Moola as it is, is basically to commit people to buying locally. That’s good, but if you don’t have a job anymore, and thus no federal money, the Mendo Moola idea is of no benefit. You are obviously a very smart person. Are you by any chance interested in coming up with a way to benefit more people in ways such as trades? I believe the future “monetary system” will include a sophisticated form of barter.

Sales taxes are charged by merchants in product transactions using Mendo Moola just like any other sales transaction. Think of it as a gift certificate you buy from a merchant. No sales tax is charged on the gift certificate itself… it is an exchange of a $20 bill for a $20 gift certificate. But sales tax is charged on the product itself when the gift certificate is used to purchase it.

Does this mean if I use Mendo Moola at the local businesses listed they wont charge me sales tax.
